Discussion from "Ask An Expert" I am unable to work due to taking care of my 73 year old Uncle. He is diabetic and will be loising his right foot soon. Harry is pretty much unable to look after himself when it comes to cooking, cleaning, personal hygene and such everyday things. He lives on his old age pension and there isn't much over at the end of the month as he only gets $1500 a month and rent is $700 + half of the electricity and heat, the phone and cable (his only source of entertainment. Is there some sort of subsidy he/I can recieve to make up for the fact I have no income comming in? Sincerely

Dear Paulette – I am sorry to hear of the challenges you are experiencing with your uncle and his health needs. Good for you for stepping up and caring for him! You may not know that Employment Insurance actually offers benefits for caregivers. The link for information is http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/sc/ei/benefits/compassionate.shtml (Compassionate care benefits for family members caring for loved ones that are gravely ill). For other resources, you could try Calgary Seniors Resource Society http://www.calgaryseniors.org/ - they have social workers that will be able to assist you in finding support. If neither of these work out, please let me know and I will try to find more information for you. Take care,
